Community Elders and HNC Establish New Conservation Area in Jariban

In a landmark community decision, elders from Jariban district have partnered with Horn Nature Conservation to establish a new community conservation area covering 1,200 hectares of grazing land and native vegetation.

The designation followed months of community consultations facilitated by HNC, during which pastoralist groups, women's associations, and local leaders agreed on boundaries, management rules, and benefit-sharing arrangements. A community resource management committee has been elected to oversee the area.

The conservation area protects critical dry-season grazing reserves and native acacia woodlands that had been threatened by overgrazing and charcoal production. Seasonal grazing rotations and restricted tree cutting will allow the ecosystem to recover while sustaining pastoralist livelihoods.

"This land belongs to our community, and now our community has decided to protect it," said Elder Abshir Omar. "We are grateful to HNC for helping us organize and plan for the future."
